Get Started

Hey there, hope you all have a wonderful holiday. I just wanted to start this post off by saying how I got into art.

I’ve taken art classes all through out school but I’d have to say I’m mostly self taught. How I got into art is actually pretty silly: I wanted to be better then my sister. One day, my sister was drawing Pokemon from the cards and showed them to my mum. My mum would rave over them and told my sister how good her drawings were. I grew jealous and determined to be better which didn’t take long. My sister didn’t have much interest in art so it wasn’t very hard to be better (though I still did a little victory dance when I got praised for my drawings haha!)

I say I’m most self taught because nothing my art teachers taught me in class seemed relevant to me. I remember my teacher in elementary school taught us how to draw a person by drawing them in simple shapes like circles and triangles, ect. It was so bogus to me; no one in real life looked like that. But I understand why she would teach kids how to draw that way, I just didn’t want to learn how to draw like that. And can you believe that was the only time any teacher of mine actually taught how to draw? I find that a little crazy.

Anyway, artists learn to draw through observation; that’s how I learned. I’ve said in a previous post that looking at a picture or a real life scene would make your art better, that’s because if you observe something enough, you’ll know how to make that into a drawing or a piece of art work.

However, where observing will help loads with your art, sometimes it’s best to have someone tell you. Like watching videos, taking a class or reading a tutorial (or watching a tutorial, doesn’t matter haha). Tutorials are loads of help! I read them all the time. Following a tutorials then drifting away to do your own thing helps with art work a lot. They’re like guide lines; if you ever read and watched a tutorial, chances are the artist said that there is no right way to do art and that their tutorial is only one way and/or a guide. This is sooo true.

“If you’re art doesn’t come out right, tell people it’s abstract” ~ My mum xD

Anyway, anyway I’ve been working on my little art projects that I’ve mentioned before but I kept getting distracted (gr youtube). I’ve been reading/watching a lot of tutorials and painting videos too; I’ve learned quite a bit.

So, I went from this…lovely…eye (my frist digitally drawn eye EVER!)

To this! =D

Of course, two completely different programs but my technology upgraded along with my skillz B) haha

Speaking of tutorials, I’m hopeing to get some up and running some time so keep a look out for those. (I still have my art projects to get done – I’m getting attacked by idea bunnies! lol)

So until my next post, I’d love to know which drawings you like best. =)
